HAPPY SATURDAY!

However, Putin seems to have overplayed his hand, and has to be palm-facing on the Sweden and Finland reaction. He’s forcing the entire planet into a protective mode of everyone vs him. Also trying to stage a justification for starting a baseless war, about 7 times in the last month, doesn’t really go that well when the entire world has satellites and spy capabilities that are slightly more advanced that Putin’s old school conventional warfare nonsense. It’s pretty amazing to watch war in the 21st century at this scale, and I am not romanticizing it vs suggesting it is so very different than it has ever been.

Sweden and Finland? And now? Belarus? Moldova? NATO is gonna end up like Oprah pretty quick:

But there’s a lot to unpack about what is happening *now*:

So… the newsletter title:

The first half of the title is Henry David Thoreau, the second half is me musing on how we’re all just trapped in the rhythm of the spheres. In fact, that’s down below in regards to cosmic rays basically jump starting our climate during the “boring billions” (see last week’s newsletter), and began the process of clouds, evaporation, and more. But there’s also a Yang to that Yin. Funny that we’ve gone from the balance of nature’s musical harmony (music of the spheres), to that of contrary forces providing balance to one another (Yin and Yang).

Thinking of Lao Tzu, I say… Hold on to the center.

Also, speaking of being yoked to something, friends were musing on the nature of creeping fascism, this confusing normalization, and the lack of outrage in context of what’s happening.  I guess we could use the “frogs in a pan” trope, but it’s literally wrong… they’ll jump out for real, and not just sit there.

I remember George Carlin talking about “power does what it wants” and blaming it on the “smartphone junkies”. That sounds derisive, but I am WHOLE HOG on this concept… but now I am evolving on what the notion of “personal responsibility” actually means. If tech and media are essentially algorithmically hacking our minds, how can we be accountable?

In this year of 2022, an era of not victim shaming, maybe it’s not all our fault?  It’s like corporations putting it on the consumer about their carbon footprint while they largely do little. I mean, 3.8 Trillion invested in fossil fuels by banks feels like a bigger deal than me recycling a bottle?

We’re being brainwashed and conditioned constantly, and I’m not talking about equating “being nice and wearing a mask” with “freedom and driving trucks to washington DC”. WHAT IS HAPPENING?

[Meanwhile:]

I am not sure we can blame all of us dummies, vs the powerful systems overlayed on our realities, that also project our perception. YES I mean tech and the news.

Simply, it’s far too profitable for tech & media to be objective, report facts & evidence vs something that helps bottom line & investors.  Then it is *also* too profitable for other companies and corporations to boycott advertising w/ them.  Legislation is intended to resolve this logjam, but politicians are owned in donations and ALEC legislation by LITERALLY THE EXACT SAME PEOPLE vs constituency. It is simply too profitable for media & technology to allow actual objective reality to evenly distribute naturally, and democracy is no longer incentivized to legislate to the people.

I’ll wrap up with this:

Eli Pariser who started MoveOn.org in 2004 actually predicted how technology would shape our beliefs, and gave a 9 minute TED Talk in 2011. He and we knew that technology was monetizing our outrage and belief systems, radicalizing us into profitability.  We were warned, all tech new this, and here we go… in 2011 we had an opportunity to prevent 2016’s flotsam and jetsam that helped us lose family members to MAGA, Bernie, and Q-Anon. Yet it still goes on… because that’s how profitable it is. Just like the Suez Canal meme up top…

We’re the victims, and we’re being shamed. It’s not up to us, and because of the political processes tied to all of this, we’ve no access or control. Don’t just shrug, let’s talk this out.

  • And now, for something completely different… Luxury Space Travel!

Ok… so it’s a Disney “Luxury Galactic Starcruiser” hotel. It’s not real (ie this is where Baudrillard comes in… it exists, but it’s not real), but there’s a lot going on.  Maybe if this was Star Trek I would vibe more on the positive future that isn’t George Orwell’s Empire stamping its boot on your face (I actually have literally no idea who wins… did anyone win?)… but this sort of drives a fairly big ambivalence in me that “THAT IS COOL”, “THAT IS SORT OF DEPRESSING”, and “I WONDER WHAT IT IS LIKE TO DESIGN A HOTEL LIKE THAT” and a bunch of other stuff.

But I think it’s more that it isn’t hospitality so much as theatre. I’m so curious and appalled and interested. And it’s without judgement… if you can afford it, and it makes you and especially your family happy… THAT IS FANTASTIC. But standing in a room with people and doing lightsaber training is likely what makes me the most “eh”… to me, it’s infinitely depressing. Simulacra isn’t the end of the world… it’s an experience. But similar to going to Las Vegas and thinking you’ve seen the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower (I’ve literally heard discussions of people saying “we’ve seen it now we don’t have to go” and “it’s good enough”), I think the notion we’re deluding ourselves out of the human condition to some manufactured place. I don’t know. I’ve realized this week I am overthinking things, because I have the time.

For example, last night we realized we never want to go to a large concert inside, ever again. That’s not about money, maybe not even about Covid.   It’s no longer for us and our idiom.  So maybe I’m grumpy and old now. Yes, yes I believe that’s it.

However, it did spawn my favorite tweet in possibly my whole life:

But… it does look exactly like Aniara, and exactly like a space cruise ship, and luxury leisure travel is gonna be miserably depressing to the pre-pandemic world of existence. Thank god for the pandemic!

More on the space hotel that makes me incredibly depressed.

So let’s get back to space:

This is Cambridge folks… not Marvel:

Conventionally, intelligence is seen as a property of individuals. However, it is also known to be a property of collectives. Here, we broaden the idea of intelligence as a collective property and extend it to the planetary scale. We consider the ways in which the appearance of technological intelligence may represent a kind of planetary scale transition, and thus might be seen not as something which happens on a planet but to a planet, much as some models propose the origin of life itself was a planetary phenomenon. Our approach follows the recognition among researchers that the correct scale to understand key aspects of life and its evolution is planetary, as opposed to the more traditional focus on individual species. We explore ways in which the concept may prove useful for three distinct domains: Earth Systems and Exoplanet studies; Anthropocene and Sustainability studies; and the study of Technosignatures and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). We argue that explorations of planetary intelligence, defined as the acquisition and application of collective knowledge operating at a planetary scale and integrated into the function of coupled planetary systems, can prove a useful framework for understanding possible paths of the long-term evolution of inhabited planets including future trajectories for life on Earth and predicting features of intelligentially steered planetary evolution on other worlds. https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/international-journal-of-astrobiology/article/intelligence-as-a-planetary-scale-process/5077C784D7FAC55F96072F7A7772C5E5

How Netta Engelhardt of MIT and colleagues found a way to reconcile the basic theories of physics, Quantum physics and Einstein’s theory of relativity. You’re about to discover what ‘unitarity’ is

Engelhardt says that the discovery (which was also reached independently by the physicist Geoff Penington of UC Berkeley, who won the same award) hinges on the interaction between gravitational entropy and quantum entropy. “Each measurement, examined independently, does not demonstrate preservation of information; you need both of them,” she stresses. “Now what’s left is to understand how the information emerges from the hole and is not destroyed, and why the quantum extremal surface successfully incorporates unitarity. That is something that we still don’t understand. But we do know which questions we have to ask in order to make progress on the information paradox. We’re able to ask more precise questions, and we have a much better idea of where we’re going.” https://www.haaretz.com/science-and-health/MAGAZINE-israeli-physicist-at-mit-paves-way-to-resolve-stephen-hawking-s-black-hole-paradox-1.10427841

  • I truly had no idea cosmic rays interacted with our atmosphere such that they may be responsible not just for an impact on our climate, they may integrate so deeply that they are where clouds came from, and it’s why outer space and our heliosphere and our atmosphere all interact to create life, and eventually possibly take it away. Moral of the story: we’re all yoked to the universe and victims of cosmic cycles. Truly the Rhythm of the Spheres.

  • Upshot: It’s not Time Travel, but Quantum Reversal means time’s arrows that point forward and backward are fluid at a quantum level.

“When the entropy produced is small enough, there is a non-negligible probability of seeing the time-reversal of a phenomenon occur naturally. “We can take the sequence of things we do in our morning routine as an example. If we were shown our toothpaste moving from the toothbrush back into its tube, we would be in no doubt it was a rewinded recording of our day. However, if we squeezed the tube gently so only a small part of the toothpaste came out, it would not be so unlikely to observe it re-entering the tube, sucked in by the tube’s decompression.” “Extending this principle to time’s arrows, it results that quantum systems evolving in one or the other temporal direction (the toothpaste coming out of or going back into the tube), can also find themselves evolving simultaneously along both temporal directions. “Although this idea seems rather nonsensical when applied to our day-to-day experience, at its most fundamental level, the laws of the universe are based on quantum-mechanical principles. This begs the question of why we never encounter these superpositions of time flows in nature,” said Dr. Rubino. Dr. Rubino said: “Although time is often treated as a continuously increasing parameter, our study shows the laws governing its flow in quantum mechanical contexts are much more complex. This may suggest that we need to rethink the way we represent this quantity in all those contexts where quantum laws play a crucial role.” https://scitechdaily.com/time-reversal-phenomenon-in-the-quantum-realm-not-even-time-flows-as-you-might-expect/

And here’s some more time travel speculation. Don’t worry, it’s impossible. Neom: What’s the green truth behind a planned eco-city in the Saudi desert? https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-59601335

Autonomous legal system has be curious, namely because of two things:

whoever is programming algorithms has implicit biases that need to be engineered out. However, reducing bias in legal proceedings… from lawyers, judges, and juries, is the ultimate goal that might be able to happen with “smart law 2.0”. I mean, HR studies have shown the wildly different pay two identical people receive just for having a name like “John Smith” vs a more ethnic sounding name, and deleting biases from juries in the same way would just be the ultimate end goal of justice. Build a system on white supremacy, then let the biases free, and it’s not going to go well.

  • This will hurt your brain for the better, but there’s a video. I always think about stuff like this… or volcanoes, lightning and thunder, hurricanes, especially asteroids and meteors or supernova and other space phenomenon: NO WONDER PEOPLE BELIEVED IN GODS AND TRIED TO NOT ANGER THEM THIS STUFF IS REALLY SCARY. Science cleared the way to understand all that, but here we are with vestigial remnants of people dancing around in loin cloths watching an eruption and thinking their kids did something to piss off Mama Nature:

Feel good vibes, boys with toys… A guy introduced a 20th century compound bow to a tribe using ancient, tried-and-true bows and arrows. AUGMENTED REALITY, VIRTUAL REALITY, METAVERSE AS THE CLOUD, AND DISTRACTIONS VS DIVERSIONS

  • HTC’s look at virtual and augmented reality? HTC is thinking “functional commercial enterprise business related applications, and Zuckerberg is thinking “monetize”. I mean, that’s why he’s literally doing digital colonialism by sticking a flag in the ground of a whole bunch of people that are saying “we’re already here, and you don’t need to monetize us k thx bai”.

Just putting this out there… I, amongst most of the rest of the thinking world, hate Facebook. I know, very brave. But I also am a user of HTC Vive Pro, and like HTC products. My favorite cell phone ever was the HTC Touch Pro, as buggy as the software was.

SO COOL. THOSE KEYS.

But the stupid co-opting of existing virtual reality and augmented reality by Facebook as “Meta” is even more annoying than calling networked storage “the cloud”. I hate marketing quite often, this one takes the rage cake. That being said, I’ve spent the better part of 3 or 4 years in virtual museums, co-op games, HUGE DJ burning man like dance parties, and played games and hung out with strangers… that’s all in VR. And Facebook didn’t invent or create or own ANY of that. They bought Oculus, and now are just thrashing about trying to get market share by choking anyone else and doing sleight of hand. Well, HTC also works in the metaverse, and they’re a bit more business oriented and sophisticated about the applications vs working in a virtual office with a big purple monster and a silly alien. So dumb, Facebook. So dumb.

And why it makes me mad? IT IS ALL AWFUL AND IT WILL ALL END UP LIKE Suarez’s Daemon where we’ve credit and social scores hovering over our heads. AUGH. What’s funny, I already play a game like this. Job Simulator, Virtual Virtual Reality, Accounting+, and Roy: A Life well lived are all games where you can work a manual labor job. For real. There’s a salvage one in space, a train conductor one. We’re just creating job games to escape our real jobs. WHAT IS HAPPENING?

Anyways, I think HTC is thinking “functional commercial enterprise business related applications, and Zuckerberg is thinking “monetize”. If Zuck has his way…. it’s this:

Now… just games:

  • Non-helmet 1997 Daft Punk set is always fun to revisit. It happens to be a great set with lots of replay value… except that Daft Punk is obviously not over if they’re doing the takedowns they’re doing. Holy cow these things are disappearing in record time. It’s supposed to be live with them not wearing helmets. But it’s just getting yanked every second. EDITOR’S NOTE: “I FOUND A COPY, SO EMAIL ME”

  • I am sure I posted this in the past, but it’s more of a suggestion, and more of a march down history lane, including Iggy Pop, my friend January, and stories from the latter being Jim’s goto best friend, leatherman, jack of all trades. Amazing stuff, and history, interviews, and more!

I think the Doors were the first punk band. But this isn’t about that. It’s about January Jansen, my friend and Jim Morrison’s best friend. We stop by and say hello to Jonas Cash and Iggy Pop as well.

  • So, Khruangbin “Texas Moon” is, I believe, solely distributed through Bandcamp. I even think their website redirects to store purchases there. That being said, Bandcamp gives you a DL when you buy an album. Upon release, album is shipped and the digital album is available. However, Dead Oceans (label) sent the album with a download card of the album, as well. IE, a redundant digital download that people didn’t need, so you’d end up giving to a friend, posting on reddit for “first come first served”, etc. I always mentally chalked that up to marketing. IE, there are people who know about “Burial” that love him and never would have known about him.  That being said, the digital download code world is HILARIOUS. I once figured out that “Rough Guide” as a label just used open and non secured URLs for all their album downloads. I think 75 albums, free, open directory, go for it. The whole thing is rife with security errors, lax management, and a lot of people managing these labels that grew up wondering why people bought music instead of limewire or napster. For real… young bands complain about the biz model, whilst ripping all their music. Bravo dissonance.

That being said… Texas Moon distributed with a download card that is NOT for the album, but for Phoebe Bridgers & Rob Moose’s “Copycat Killer”. My theory:

The whole “wrong download card” might be a mistake, but I like to think of it as marketing. They know we get the bandcamp digital download, so did they market a similar / adjacent act? Is bandcamp the only distribution point for them?

If this was a mistake, marketing manager feel free to use my optimism.

I’ve not heard it yet, but if it’s like Miss Kittin & Goldenboy’s “Rippin’ Kittin” (editor note: I know it’s not) I’ll be all good!

MOVIES AND STUFF!

  • I mentioned Aniara, a criminally (dramatic, much?) underseen two part Swedish Space Opera (that incidentally is also a stage play). I’ve hoped to see it tour. It’s about existence, coping, meaning, annihilation, anxiety, expectation, and pretty much happens to encapsulate the human condition, and the dread and existentialism within the context of trying to find self-actualization and peace while facing oblivion. There’s no spoilers… that’s literally just life.

But the wiki uses the word “dystopian”, and I am pretty sure that’s just how things are.

“Aniara is a 2018 science fiction film written and directed by Pella Kågerman and Hugo Lilja. The film is an adaptation of the 1956 Swedish poem of the same name by Harry Martinson. The film is set in a dystopian future where climate change ravages Earth, prompting mass migration from Earth to Mars. When such a routine trip veers off course, the passengers of the Aniara struggle to cope with their new lives”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aniara_(film)

  • Interesting older concept from psychotherapy, and the advancements we’ve made in the last 50 years is surreal.  I think one of the most important and major cultural aspects to how we’re innovating in how to treat the brain is that we truly have begun our movement out of a dialectical “this or that” culture, to noticing a spectrum, and a band of many possibilities, whether that’s gender, autism, or mental illness. But the highlighting that there are multiple ways and types of suffering is remarkable, and that our goal should be working on changing our exhausting neuroticism to just plain jane ordinary sadness.
