I’m so much of a damned snob, I buy what I want and no longer do RSD.

Preface: I am just a dumb guy, one who overthinks and struggles with his stupid thoughts, and after talking to conflicted shop owners, it’s a weird thing.

This literally is a peak into my dementia, and I’m always thrilled when people have and find joy. Like forget ANYONE finger wagging a happy day, you know?

It just makes me feel bad, and I hate how busy it is. Also, due to tying up all their cash flow into a make or break single day event for the year (or every quarter), it’s stressful. Then you’ve got supply chain shit that crunches the industry, and rushed production with stupid mastering errors or bad surface noise, etc.  What’s more, after the bloom was off the rose, I notice any shop I go into has RSD inventory from as far back as 10 years ago. It’s got to suck to tie up cash into wax for a decade. But I get any inventory does that, too.

This is my favorite thing in the history of Record Store Day, a microsoft windows notification recorded onto the album. SO MANY RSD albums are from digital sources =( – https://www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/comments/k3ksqi/reggae_record_labels_often_have_poor_quality/

I sorta got into it here, but I’m not trying to be a bummer. https://twitter.com/HHotelConsult/status/1781763030034129315

TO BE POSITIVE HERE IS SOME MUSIC…. I’ll share my disgusting addiction of not having a budget, nor planning, not having kids, and having a positive cash flow as not much of a consumerist household… Also, the illness of being a completionist with your favorite music is a troubling nightmare.

THINGS

1) I am happy to say I found a long lost unavailable Icelandic folk album. It hadn’t been available for ** 30 years ** and it popped up on a random record store site, and immediately went out of stock again. It’s one of my favorite albums ever, and it’s even hard to find digitally. Super happy.

2) I’ve finally collected all of Hania Rani’s releases. Along with Jordan Rakei or Espen Horne, she’s one of my favorite living artists.

3) Not listed is a couple Suicide albums I picked up. Oddly, they’re a GREAT band that influenced both punk and electronic in the 70s, and FOR SOME FUCKING REASON A24 BROUGHT THEM TO THE FOREFRONT … in Love Lies Bleeding, and Civil War… Suicide appears. The end of Civil War was perfect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFYMsGj3ZhI

3) 2024 Album of the Year – reprint or release or remaster: I’ve got two: Cortex’s Troupeau Bleu (actually a darling of hip hop producers: Tyler the Creator, Madlib, Rick Ross), and Boillat Therace Quintet’s 1974 + 3. Both are WILDLY FUNKY JAZZ from France in the 1970s.

nb: the label the latter album is on will take all your money, especially if you like Japanese Jazz re-releases. “We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records” WRWTFWW Records + We Release Jazz https://wereleasewhateverthefuckwewantrecords.bandcamp.com

4) My Album of the Year 2023: Ghosts by Hania Rani. I’d have to think harder tho.

5) My Album of the Year 2024 up til May? Espen Horne’s “The Anatomy of Serene Elegance”. He’s the founder of the Bobby Hughes Experience, The Bobby Hughes Combination, Kinny and Horne, amongst other stuff.

6) Another thing I’ve been “finishing” as a dumbass completionist: Geoff Barrow from Portishead, and Ben Salisbury who is a film score guy, have worked together with Alex Garland on Ex Machina, Annihilation, Devs, Men, and Civil War. Civil War’s soundtrack is the first time it took front and center over score work, but a lot of Civil War’s score reminded me of Annihilation, especially as it wove acoustic guitar in and out. They’re hard to find on bandcamp, but if you like ambient scores, it’s spooky magic. More of their work here: https://www.invada.co.uk/search?type=product&q=salisbury+barrow
