This newsletter is DENSE. AND LONG. So it’s like a book. And it made me think, for Christmas and New Years, it’s really enjoyable to read, and explore a universe that isn’t over-connected breaking news, or just trial after trial of existential existences.
WHY NOT SOME CURIOUS FUN?!?!
Books are a window into someone’s mind. It’s my favorite thing to do, in the years prior to virus-all-the-time and visiting stranger’s homes, is to act like a voyeur while inhaling the works people have elected to keep or showcase on their bookshelves. It’s also so highly personal, truly a voyeur peering into an open mind.

Also, Trainspotting is totally socially distanced and safe, especially because almost no one does it. But taking a note from this guy, we might like it. LOL

- ROGUE PLANETS don’t play by the rules. These free floaters roam the universe on their own without being bound to a host star. Astronomers know very little about these rebellious worlds, but a recent discovery may help them learn more about free-floating planets. Using data from several telescopes worldwide, a team of astronomers discovered at least 70 rogue planets in the Milky Way, marking the largest group of rogue planets ever found. https://www.inverse.com/science/largest-group-of-rogue-planets

Dec 22 at 4:20a PSTDec 24th 6:00am EST, 3:00am PST, it’s the countdown to the Webb Space Telescope launch. Those that know…. are losing their minds that the most powerful telescope in human history will venture out to space for about a month of “unfurling” to become the most profoundly important exploration device in human history, which will tell us things about our solar system, galaxy, and cosmos than we ever thought possible. Super exciting! It’s about 100x more powerful than Hubble.

- Considering people are finally beginning to understand the horrifying impact of Britain or USA’s past colonization, when society realizes we’re going to have to eventually colonize a bunch of other PLANETS, there’s gonna be some real ethical and moral ambivalence.
SJW BE LIKE:
But when we colonize, we’re going to have to figure out how to build *REALLY* large things, like excavators and geo-engineering plants to alter the atmosphere. First, we’ll have to master 3D printing in zero gravity, and an experiment was conducted on ISS earlier this year:
An experiment in 3D printing in zero gravity https://makepartsfast.com/an-experiment-in-3d-printing-in-zero-gravity/

And in fact, people are already figuring out how to 3D print and build habitats for colonizing Mars:
The truth is, all of this will be precipitated on self-replicating robots and probes to do all the dangerous heavy lifting for possibly centuries before humans head over. But we’re already building infrastructure, and that is helping establish something called In-Situ Resource Utilization:

- This is a wonderful story about Guerilla Winemakers in lost and dusty corners of Southern France that are fighting nearly 100 years of vapid traditionalism by using American vines that are more resistant to things like climate change, going against a government that has banned them, while proving these vines result in some tasty wine that can beat the traditional methods that are being lost to floods and frost:

- NEW CONTENT I HAVE WATCHED ALERT!!!:
Stand up: The new Jim Gaffigan is great. The new Jimmy Carr is superb, as always, and I love how dark he is. Also, I don’t think I can celebrate Tim Heidecker enough. He did a performance art Andy Kaufman style stand up comedy bit that was an hour and just a fucking brilliant train wreck. For fans of Andy Kaufman or that sort of groundbreaking performance art, definitely check it out:
- Gremlins 2 is a Hollywood executive coked-out fever dream and it’s glorious, but the original Gremlins is hit you in the face Christmas movie that’s just unreal. I don’t think it gets enough love, but Nicolas Cage and “The Family Man” with Tea “hubba” Leone is really a great Christmas film. It’s a riff on “A Wonderful Life” and may be better than the original, if you are into modern sensibilities. LOL
- Children of men is a increasingly becoming a master stroke, and the time between release and present day is daylighting brilliance. Probably one of the greatest films ever made. Interestingly, with the absence of children, the background allegorical subtext about pet ownership is very interesting, and you only see it briefly from scene to scene on fliers, store fronts, and the TV in the background.
- SPEAKING OF ANIMALS: All the Benji movies are glorious, but the remake is actually really amazing. Makes me feel like I’m closer to my dog.
- I’ve never encountered more spoilers for a film, in broad daylight, than the new Spider Man: No Way Home. And yes, I won’t regale you with ruining the movie here, but honestly you do sort of need to see movies released opening weekend, or watch episodic releases of tv shows, because PEOPLE HAVE NO CHILL. But no spoilers… I rewatched “Spider-Man: Far from Home”, and it is not only absolutely amazing… from what I have heard from the new film, it’s possible Sony pulled off a crazy win by making the best Marvel films. And to my chagrin, Tom Rothman licensing Spider Man to Disney/Marvel for Captain America might have been the thing that made the most amazing Marvel films. It looked like total idiocy at the time. It’s almost impossible to avoid spoilers for no way home, but mixing Spider-Man with the multiverse is probably the most excited I’ve ever been and I can’t wait to watch it.
- The new Matrix is fine. I do like it as a love story and standalone film. It’s far better than the original sequels. Keanu Reeves is a gem, and him doing his stunts at 57 after I threw my back out on Christmas by sitting legs crossed apple sauce? AMAZING. I do think this clip is John Wick 4. If they kill another Dog? Imma go ham.

- I recently rewatched John Heard’s primal LSD fever dream “Altered States”. Wow. Just amazing surrealism and what an attempt at something edgy and broad in the early 80s.

- Ryan Reynolds 2005 Amityville Horror remake. That is the entire point and line. Although, my wife was somewhat concerned with the fact that I could not stop talking about how hot Ryan was in this film. Ryan Reynolds will never be hotter in his whole life than chopping wood in this dumb remake. Also I chose to mistakebly watch “RIPD”, which was SURREAL weird, and I cannot believe they greenlit such a bizarre demographic of a film. Ryan was vanilla and the two leads were in different movies. so odd.
ANYWAYS… this is the cutest interview in the history of time, and Jakey-Jake and Ry-Ry need to be a thing. From a film called “Life” which is basically a remake of Alien in a way, with a twist tricky ending derrrrrr derrrr
& HERE IS RYAN REYNOLDS CHOPPING WOOD:

- Joe Pera is a gem, on HBO. If you like your comedy midwestern, sleepy, and calm.
This is not his show, but an animated clip that sorta greenlit it. I think. Joe Pera Talks You to Sleep is so charming and delightful, and it’s just full of love and sweetness.
Good intro:
- David Lynch’s full “Rabbits”, a concept art of horror vignettes as discussion of typical network sitcoms and the yawning, meaningless, blathering and unyielding stupidity that they are.
- YES, some sitcoms changed the game, like Arrested Development that went largely unknown until the format was ripped off countless times, to make some okay sitcoms like Modern Family and Black-ish. But the most offensive thing I’ve ever seen is Big Bang Theory. Scattering a listicle of pop culture nerd name brands is as egregious as Ready Player One’s nostalgia-porn keyword stuffing of 1980s toys and games.

- And just in case you don’t agree about Ready Player One, this is a real page, from a real book, that sold film rights prior to even being published, where the author spent his retainer on a damned Delorean. It’s just too perfect. I hope he wrote for Big Bang Theory.

- Alan Tudyk is back as the Alien doctor in a Colorado Mountain Town, Season 2 is getting a January 28th release date. You know what that’s awesome? BECAUSE THE SHOW IS SO FUN. Based on a Dark Horse comic of the same name, it’s a crash landed Alien who needs to blend in, loves pizza, and tries to not eat a child. It’s hilarious, heartfelt, and Tudyk could win an Emmy in this role that is Northern Exposure vs Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Please watch it, and let’s get to Season 3!!

- I watched Benji the Hunted from 1987, yesterday. It’s like a meditative nature documentary with the cutest little pup ever, and guess what? I unconsciously was manifesting my little childhood love of Benji into adopting my Cairn Terriers. LOL Rescuing is sometimes “you aren’t sure what you’re going to get”, but being able to see the growth of a rescue is the most rewarding thing ever, from their former selves to the pup they’re supposed to be! Anyways, the fact Benji had such an impact on adopting rescues vs supporting backyard puppy mills is wonderful, and Joe Camp is just a gem of a human.

- I spoke about Brandon Cronenberg, son to body horror maestro David Cronenberg of (Shivers, Scanners, The Fly, ExistenZ, History of Violence, Eastern Promises), and his recent “Possessor” as one of the most incredible but disturbing and difficult watches I’ve seen in years, both from a body horror, and existential horror, perspective. What a film. Well guess what? His sister now enters the mix. Caitlin is set to helm an interesting concept, “Humane”.

- The first use of *CGI* in film history, I give you… Yul Brenner and 1973’s Westworld. Also, Yul Brenner was an asshole. Ask Jeff B. Davis from Whose Line Is It Anyway and Harmontown and Highway to Heaven. On Harmontown, Jeff tells stories about working with Yul Brenner on The King and I on Broadway.
- Per Don Knotts, his only, single dramatic role, ever:

MUSIC & I am realizing people didn’t know Peter Gabriel was the frontman of Genesis til he left and people let Phil Collins sing, which I guess is fine but not really.

- Vox does this “earworm” thing, and its superb. They do an excellent one on how “smooth jazz” took over in the 80s (Hi Kenny G!), and why you don’t have to judge your parents for being ambulatory vacuum tubes that could be marketed to and manipulated to. You can search that one up… but a recording error in a Genesis recording section created the sound of the 1980s. I mean, think of Peter Gabriel’s “Intruder” is fully vested in it, and it might bring the effect to mind. But really, I think “In the Air Tonight” is the starting point for you Peter Gabriel sacrilegious types.
- JAI PAUL: Here’s one of my Top 10 musical humans… This is the entire complex and weird and wild and sad and CRAZY story about how he blew up around 2010, because of MySpace of all things LOL: https://youtu.be/R5KLGWFopTQ
I doubt I’ve ever spoken about him. Too long a story, but a bit of it is in the linked blog post below his music. This track was on his leaked album from 2013, and Imma go ahead and say it’s THE BANGER of the 2010’s.
So I wish I knew the $11 album I got in June of 2019 would become a $200 EP that literally only has two tracks. Wow.
Song of the Summer 2019. I personally feel it’s a direct callback to Peter Gabriel’s “Don’t Give Up” from his album So.
The B-Side “He” (WHICH ARE NECESSARY Mr. SAUER) used gated reverb perfectly. I thought it was Phil Collins all over again. But this is just amazing:
This was the song that introduced me to him. I was grieving my dog Pavlov. Why oh why do dogs require so much grieving? Anyway, story in the old post below, how the internet is wild, and like “Searching for Sugar Man” w/ Rodriguez being found in random ways by people that were not expecting it, so was I with Jai Paul, Khruangbin, and Sofi Tukker.
- More of my favorites? SURE WE CAN DO THAT!
- I had drooled words about this guy, but basically it became a post (below video). He’s a breathtakingly talented song-writer, and his videos as multi-layered meta commentary on his own art are just stunning:
@benbenabrahamDefinitely thought I was alone at 3am oops #singing #christmas? original sound – Ben Abraham
- This disco floor ready version of Comfortably Numb is going to make some Pink Floyd fans angry. I find it both interesting, and weird. I love the idea of a cover adding to the conversation vs just “why aren’t I listening to the original?”. I thought I HATED this version when I first heard it, and it sort of grabbed hold of my head and motorboated me into its cleavage.
- You know the CIA used music as a weapon?
So… Atlas Obscura is amazing. This article on Louis Armstrong in Ghana is great… “How Louis Armstrong Shaped the Sound of Ghana You can still hear echoes of the trumpeter’s 1956 visit in Accra’s clubs today. ” https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/louis-armstrong-jazz-highlife-ghana
**But**…. the idea the article didn’t bring up the CIA is bonkers. Whether you think the band “The Scorpions” were a CIA front or not, the CIA definitely used music “ambassadors” as people who might spread democracy and affect change. The CIA were using people like Louis Armstrong, and Dizzy… AND Nina Simone who WOULD HAVE BEEN SO PISSED. But that’s why people think the Scorpions were a CIA front. The podcast “Winds of Change” is excellent. 8 eps. https://crooked.com/podcast-series/wind-of-change/
More:
“Not just the Scorpions’ story but, I mean, the Nina Simone story. This guy Hugh Wilford, this academic, had gone into the files and discovered that Nina Simone basically got sent to Nigeria unbeknown to her by the CIA in 1961. That one may have hit me especially strongly, because I grew up listening to Nina Simone. Of all the artists we talk about in the show, she’s probably the one who has meant the most to me for the longest, and it’s hard to escape the conclusion that had she known, she would have been pretty furious.” https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/wind-of-change-cia-propaganda-cold-war-podcast-1027873/
- BEN KHAN: People have opinions about this guy as being a creative vs follower and “copper”, namely overly loyal Jai Paul fans [points up] think he’s copping beats and concepts. But, you know why I don’t give A SHIT?

Honestly, I thought we’d be using the destitute or prisoners first, but here we have ACTAULY SHOOL TEACHERS in a game known as “Late Stage Capitalism”, ie take the systemic manufactured hardship of exploited workers into a delightful spectacle and as entertainment for the rest of the population. I guess the new opiate is diversion.

- I think about this daily. It’s so brutally weird what’s happening. But, “inflation”. But, “HIS POWERPOINT”.
Hi it’s December 2021, and it’s now literally in writing that senior advisers to the ex president of the United States plotted to declare a bogus national emergency to cancel a national election and seize the government by military force

- When people are mad about inflation, but also won’t work… the entire state of our economy is so complex, and there’s not enough nuance when looking at the interrelated issues. This article does some heavy lifting:
This is a VERY interesting take on the nuance of “Staffing shortage” vs “it’s a wage problem”. Well, as a hiring person… it’s not a wage shortage. The wages are skyrocketing, and it’s also not the benefits. It’s likely the career / position / experience. It’s the dehumanizing aspect of entitled guests and bad management, but there’s still SO MUCH value in a career in hospitality or service. You just need to find the right group. That being said, “anti-work” people won’t be happy with this take, but it’s dealing with some of the back end issues
Wait for the “Big Backfire”: You’ve likely heard about the droves of people quitting jobs this year. Have you thought about what comes next? https://www.inc.com/michael-walters/employees-jobs-technology-automation.html What’s “As more people leave the workforce & as biz add more costs, it adds pressure to those who stay”

- There’s a phenomenon of “we want plates”… this is horrifying.

So trigger, I guess, in this day and age, because either everything is too real, or too harmful. I think what is harmful, especially for those of you meat eaters or pescatarians that might react to this is that we really don’t want to be connected to our food system or pathway, do we? I mean “BUY LOCAL” means as much as you want til you have to connect that your poke was a thing, or that a burger was a fluffy cow. I eat all the proteins, but I also get the compexity of our food delivery systems, and as they scale they become less humane. So, as they say… know your farmer, know where it comes from. Don’t use factory farms or support them, but being a smart, ethical consumer is also really difficult… and what’s more, if you can afford it, it is a privilege. Not everyone has the time or money to source back who made that packet of ramen, if the grain was raised and handled well, if the employees were paid well enough to live their lives…
But having been in kitchens and seeing animals go from “that’s cute” to “fully rendered and fully utilized” (there’s so little waste off a fish like this. You can cure the heart and shave it like a prosciutto onto a carbonara. You can cook the spine like ribs and make it all zesty, so when you break it apart there’s an incredible bone marrow of sorts (cartilage).

- I know it’s privilege to vote with your cash, as many just need food on the table and don’t have the space to make food a moral commentary. But, as Wendell Berry stated, “eating is an agricultural act”. If you don’t “vote”, that’s fine… but there is no escaping that eating puts you in the crosshairs of a wildly complex economic, political, and social process, and it is happening whether you involve yourself or not. Not all meat is inherently bad. And not all meat is simply “good”. It’s the source, it’s how they handle it. A butcher friend of mine intoned this famous phrase, recently:

- Robson Square was an elegant attempt at fusing design with pragmatism in 1970s Vancouver, British Columbia. The ADA ramp is now “ornamental” as there are some concerns about antiquated safety rules for ADA vs new ramping elevation and grading guidelines, but I think it’s a testament to architecture than form and function *CAN* be married:
