For people suffering the consequences of their own actions:
@doctorfubbs Put respect on yourself.#drfubbs #omg ? Blame Game – Doctor Fubbs
The subject / headline quote is Plato.
I’m not that complex. If you have a belief system or religion that makes you think you’re superior or more important than anyone else, you’re wrong. If you act on that and subjugate or marginalize another group of people, you’re in the wrong. If you use belief or non-quantifiable religious notions or specious reasoning, you’re the problem. Don’t kill people. I do get that a tolerant society needs to be intolerant of intolerance. I get that what’s happening in the Middle East there’s IDF, Hamas, Hezbollah, and I get there’s bad human beings of every walk, but I also get that humans just trying to exist, at a festival or in their homes, are NOT their governments but pawns trapped, powerless in the middle. Yes, I know there’s people who celebrate the deaths of innocents on both sides like it’s some righteous mission accomplished.
But we’re just killing humans trying to exist, and we’re just causing more intergenerational trauma and extending the wars beyond sense, into the madness of our future end of time.
If you immediately want to make this about me having an opinion about your group of people, or that group’s actions… I don’t, and don’t you dare. Just figure it out. We’re making ourselves look like atavistic, bloodthirsty, unhinged animals. Or, maybe we just are.
In fact: This Atlantic article (odd link as it bypasses the paywall) speaks to this frightening moment: I’m Running Out of Ways to Explain How Bad This Is: What’s happening in America today is something darker than a misinformation crisis.
What is clear is that a new framework is needed to describe this fracturing. Misinformation is too technical, too freighted, and, after almost a decade of Trump, too political. Nor does it explain what is really happening, which is nothing less than a cultural assault on any person or institution that operates in reality. If you are a weatherperson, you’re a target. The same goes for journalists, election workers, scientists, doctors, and first responders. These jobs are different, but the thing they share is that they all must attend to and describe the world as it is. This makes them dangerous to people who cannot abide by the agonizing constraints of reality, as well as those who have financial and political interests in keeping up the charade.
Which then calls back to Carl Sagan’s prophetic worry in the 1990s, this is the first chapter of “The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark”
“Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time—when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness. The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance. As I write, the number-one videocassette rental in America is the movie Dumb and Dumber. “Beavis and Butthead” remain popular (and influential) with young TV viewers. The plain lesson is that study and learning—not just of science, but of anything—are avoidable, even undesirable.”
Onward to culture! The Red Lion Inn, Silverlake, Los Angeles, California… IN 2024. What a vibe! I smell butts by a cigarette machine, bar rot, and miserable, failed dreams. I like it. As Tom Waits said in Putnam County, “swizzle-stick legs jackknifed over naugahyde stools”.

@wealth NASA’s Capillary Cup is seriously out of this world! It’s like the ultimate space coffee experience, designed by astronaut Donald Pettit to let astronauts sip their brew without the whole bag and straw hassle. ? The cup’s clever use of capillary action is a game-changer for fluid dynamics research in space, and it’s even sparking new ideas for tech back on Earth, like some handy portable medical devices. ? The Capillary Cup is a zero-gravity cup designed by NASA astronaut Donald Pettit on the International Space Station. The product is an open drinking cup designed to be used in a microgravity environment, developed from Pettit’s desire to drink water without a bag and straw in outer space. https://www.rit.edu/vignellicenter/product-timecapsule/nasa-capillary-cup
“It is a prime example of the intersection of design, science, and engineering. It allows crews to drink and toast from an open container commensurate like how we do on Earth.”

- Pair of huge plasma jets spotted blasting out of gigantic black hole Streams are the largest ever seen, measuring 23m light years and with combined power of trillions of suns https://www.theguardian.com/science/2024/sep/18/huge-plasma-jets-spotted-gigantic-black-hole-porphyrion.
23 million light years in length… that’s 140 Milky Ways end to end. Artist’s Rendering:

The M87 jet (below) is much smaller (around 3000-5000 light years). https://scitechdaily.com/5000-light-year-long-jet-of-superheated-gas-ejected-from-a-supermassive-black-hole/
Astrophysics nerd here! This is what is known as an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN), a supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy that is actively consuming matter. My Black Holes professor actually specialized in their research – I’m shooting him an email as we speak!
That bright light in the center is a quasar – a class of supermassive black holes that is gobbling up an insane amount of matter. The frictional forces at work as the matter spirals inward causes it to glow intensely, not just brighter than a star, but brighter than galaxies with billions of stars. There are galaxies we cannot see without blocking out the light of their central quasars because the black hole outshines it – perplexingly, this makes black holes both the darkest and brightest phenomena in the universe!
Those plasma jets are matter being spewed at relativistic speeds from the rotational poles of the black hole – the distance is 23 million light years across, or 7 MegaParsecs. For context, the distance from the sun to Pluto is about 5-6 lighthours, this jet is long enough to span 140 Milky Way galaxies across – all coming out of the end of a black hole!
This actually challenges our current understanding of AGNs a little. I’d love to talk more about it for anyone curious, going to see what my old professor has to say about it!

- Terry Pratchett’s Discworld has a fascinating economic concept called Boots Theory: the poor cannot afford to purchase quality, so they are locked into purchasing and re-purchasing low quality at a higher cost over time vs the wealthy buying a more expensive version that lasts longer, saving cost in the long run:
The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. … A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. … But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.[4] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boots_theory
