You ever heard of the “Mandela Effect”? Long story short, it’s a mass delusion.

This will probably mess you up, ie examples of many, many Mandela Effects: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/entertainment/g28438966/mandela-effect-examples/

To wit: The Fruit of the Loom logo never had a cornucopia, ie “horn of plenty”.

It’s where I learned the word “cornucopia”, and I am aghast and floored, and confused, and betrayed. I worry reality is not correct.

WHAT IN THE HECK?

It’s the one on the right, and the website even says “no cornucopia ever”. Here’s their logo history:

Twitter Is Debating Which Fruit Of The Loom Logo Is Right, After Man Points Out You’re Probably Remembering It Wrong https://ruinmyweek.com/weird/mandela-effect-fruit-of-the-loom-logo-cornucopia/

  • RIP Cormac McCarthy. All passages from Blood Meridian.

  • I fixed and updated the “Struggle to Right Oneself” post.

“Philosopher Martin Heidegger described human existence as a process of perpetual falling, and it is the responsibility of each individual to catch ourselves from our own uncertainty. This unsettling prognosis of life informs my present body of work. I continually return to questions regarding the nature of control and its effects on this perceived responsibility, since beyond the basic laws that govern and maintain our equilibrium, we live in a world that constantly tests our stability in various other forms. War and rumors of war, issues of security, effects of globalization, and the politics of identity are external gravities turned inward, serving to further threaten the precarious balance of self, exaggerating negative feelings of control”.

I think about Channel Local 58 a LOT. Some of the best and most unsettling horror out there.

Sci-Tech

  • Are you tired of tech yet? This guy nails Apple’s new AR glasses, and our tech fatigue.  $3500 so some rich parents can buy their kid a $3500 headset so he can yell inappropriate remarks at people in Walkabout Mini Golf VR. OH RIGHT, Apple has a closed sandbox with no content, in an era people are DESPERATE to have human connection.  This is definitely going to be a failure, or I mean interesting. I agree hard with this dude, and the comment about Cook skating is ROUGH.

  • Eating gamma radiation for breakfast –

In the late 1980s Ukrainian scientists studying the dark, dangerous interior of Chernobyl’s destroyed Reactor 4 found that a black, mould-like fungus was growing across the walls and in pools of radioactive water. The fungus was not just surviving the immense radiation levels in the reactor building, but seemed to be thriving – even growing towards the very highest levels of gamma radiation.

Some groups are looking to make synthetic melanins for use as protectorants against UV or other forms of radiation. Others think fungi could find a use in the bioremediation of radioactive waste. Dadachova is particularly interested in how melanin could be used to help protect patients undergoing radiation therapies. She is also working on a collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency and scientists from the Brookhaven National Laboratory on melanin-based spacesuits that could protect astronauts from the effects of radiation in space. (The work has so far involved making tiny melanin helmets to protect the brains of mice.) Future applications Then there is the possibility that radiotrophic fungi could help us develop new sources of renewable energy and biomaterials. “There are many places on our planet that experience very [little rain] and where plants are difficult to grow. Could you replace them with plants or fungi that use melanin instead of chlorophyll? Those guys don’t mind being in very dry conditions. And they will probably make the same useful sugars and other things that we take from green plants currently,” says Dadachova. More speculative ideas imagine that these fungi could help protect or even feed space colonists – for example, forming a self-replicating radioprotective building material for a Martian base. https://thebiologist.rsb.org.uk/biologist-features/eating-gamma-radiation-for-breakfast

Movies & TV

  • A guy made fake community access cable TV bumper ads, and it’s the most Lovecraftian and subversively frightening and tense psychological horror on the web. People were running into these thinking they were real, and a real mythology was built around it. As an experiment, whether a creative person or a film school project… I love these and think on them A LOT. I would love to be part of creating something this profoundly disturbing. They are about 1 – 3 minutes apiece, there’s 9. They are really brilliant.

  • Bing Crosby was denied a hotel room for wearing Denim, and the Canadian Tuxedo was born:

Did Bing Crosby invent the Canadian tuxedo?

Singer Bing Crosby was very fond of Levi’s jeans and was wearing his favorite pair while on a hunting trip to Canada with a friend in that year. The men tried to check into a Vancouver hotel, but because they were wearing denim, the desk clerk would not give them a room; apparently denim-clad visitors were not considered high-class enough for this hotel. Because the men were wearing Levi’s jeans, the clerk did not even bother to look past their clothing to see that he was turning away America’s most beloved singer (luckily for Bing, he was finally recognized by the bellhop). LS&CO. heard about this and created a denim tuxedo jacket for Bing, which we presented to him at a celebration in Elko, Nevada, where Bing was honorary mayor. https://www.cbc.ca/radio/q/blog/did-bing-crosby-invent-the-canadian-tuxedo-1.4181725
