The title is a famous African (apocryphal, attributed) proverb. That an entire person’s experiences and thoughts disappear into nothing when we shuffle our mortal coil, and it’s tantamount to the death of a library of facts and institutional knowledge and oral history. It makes Eagleman’s concept of there being 3 deaths that much more profound:

“There are three deaths. The first is when the body ceases to function. The second is when the body is consigned to the grave. The third is that moment, sometime in the future, when your name is spoken for the last time.” ? David M. Eagleman

So listen, recognize, connect, let people be heard, and when they no longer have a voice in this world, you carry them forward with you, and you let their wisdom guide you. Say their names, and celebrate existence.

Speaking of death, I keep wanting to kill the newsletter, but it brings a surreal, ineffable joy. There’s no point, no revenue, no real reason, but I don’t know, a complex hobby? It’s an interesting personal experiment. For those eyes that slowly drool downwards, and enjoy it… my empty promises to lock this newsletter away will go unheard and powers that be will no longer attempt to handicap your joy filled perusals. I might even mean to be timely with it.

And I can’t deny AI’s opinion of it (INFO QUALITY MAY VARY):

Philosophy?

  • People losing their minds in France over the austerity of moving retirement and pension from 62 to 64.  However, France will France, and French people will never stop being French. That being said… the most French thing ever.

  • Memento Mori… “Remember that you have to die”.

It’s Latin, weird dudes. Pretty scared of the God guy, methinks.

A memento mori is an artwork designed to remind the viewer of their mortality and of the shortness and fragility of human life.  https://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/m/memento-mori

  • You guys know I appreciate the film “Annihilation” as one of my favorite of all time, possibly my favorite film? It deals with the nature of humans self-destructing, or reimagining and growing a new self to overtake the old like a parasite or Phoenix from the ashes… that we constantly annihilate or kill our former selves, and we’re never the same person we were or are, as well as our partners and friends.  A lot is steeped in philosophy, and I think this concept of positive disintegration as the yang to the film’s Yin… that self-destruction, trauma, anxiety, and the like is a mandatory and giant part of the human condition and experience.

The theory of positive disintegration (TPD) is an idea of personality development developed by Polish psychologist Kazimierz D?browski. Unlike mainstream psychology, the idea views psychological tension and anxiety as necessary for personal growth. These “disintegrative” processes are “positive,” whereas people who fail to go through positive disintegration may stop at “primary integration,” possessing individuality but nevertheless lacking an autonomous personality and remaining impressionable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Positive_disintegration

Here is a bit more on the film:

Going from sanity to being locked into the subjectivity of existence, a note from the movie Annihilation.

  • This conversation between Stephen Colbert and Anderson Cooper is an emotional doozy, and Colbert blows my mind on how to handle grief in context of the human condition.

“If there is a God, He will have to beg my forgiveness.” — A phrase that was carved on the walls of a concentration camp cell during WWII by a Jewish prisoner.

When Stephen Fry was asked about his atheism, and “what if there is a God”. His answer is so brilliantly on point:

“I’d say, Bone cancer in children? What’s that about?” answered the 57-year-old Brit. “How dare you? How dare you create a world to which there is such misery that is not our fault? It’s not right, it’s utterly, utterly evil.”

  • Also, this is Tina Belcher’s voice, but it’s simply his voice. He’s not voice acting / altering. So read it in Tina’s voice.

MOVIES AND TV

  • Lovecraft vs X-Men in Vietnam. This is truly one of the greatest shorts I’ve ever seen in my life, by Oats Studio and the incomparable Neill Blomkamp. THIS IS UNBRIDLED GORE AND HORROR. So if you don’t like it, don’t click it. Essentially, one of the greatest Vietnam movies ever, as well, marrying the chaos and anxiety around the mythos and legends of the jungle in a foreign country.  This also has some pathos for the demon, dubbed “The River God”. But if you don’t like cosmic horror, realistic trauma and gore… no clicky, keep it blue.  If you like Special Effects, deft movie making, or enjoyed reading “how’d they do it” in Fangoria as a child… this is one of the best experiences you’re going to have in a long time.

  • Did you “like” Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian”?

If you like that and the above, check out the brilliant “Bone Tomahawk” with Kurt Russell, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox, and Patrick Wilson. A small 1890s western town wakes up to find two townsfolk and a drifter kidnapped by a gang of cave dwelling aboriginal troglodytes. The first two acts have some of the best written banter, as the posse forms and makes their way across the plains to find the kidnapped.  But the third act steers into some of the most incomprehensible brutality, and it’s incredible gripping. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/bone_tomahawk

Come for incredible writing and horrifying wild west brutality, stay for the wonderful facial hair on Jack Burton here:

Another Modern Western to check out is Ravenous, an 1840’s Sierra Nevada outpost, not far from the Donner tragedy, has a stranger come a-knockin and all hell breaks lose. I do think this is one of the most underrated film of the 1990s (1999), and I think it’s got one of the greatest unsung scores in history, and if you like banjos… the greatest soundtrack ever. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/ravenous

  • MY VOICE IS MY PASSPORT. VERIFY ME. Sneakers is a lost treasure, and yes that’s Treasure Island in the background. It’s one of the BEST San Francisco films ever, this side of The Game.  This cast, man: Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Dan Aykroyd, David Strathairn, River Phoenix, Mary McDonnell, Ben Kingsley, Stephen Tobolowsky, James Earl Jones, Eddie Jones, Timothy Busfield, and more. Great quick read on it, at that link below. But it’s a gem from 1992, and you should watch it.

Phil Alden Robinson’s Sneakers might just be the most undervalued movie of all time. It’s a political thriller, a caper, “tech-noir,” a little like Three Days of the Condor reimagined as a buddy film.  The premise of Sneakers is its biggest misdirection of all. What seems to be a movie about high-tech culture is a fundamentally low-tech story. Roger Ebert wrote, “one of the weaknesses of the movie is the way it pretends to be a techno-thriller when in fact it recycles much older traditions.” But it’s not a weakness, it’s the point. Sneakers is about human beings and their relationships, how the solutions to their problems are low-tech: distracting the concierge with a delivery of Liquid Drano, kicking down the door, listening, teamwork, and a dim sum date with Stephen Tobolowsky. https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2017/05/18/too-many-secrets-decrypting-sneakers

  • Did you know the Egyptians would find a huge brick of earth, carve it, then lift it… that’s how they got all the stuff built and looking like it needed Aliens to do so. Well, it’s the Unfinished Obelisk that helped teach us that. It remains unfinished in the ground because after legit years of carving, it cracked… and they had to start over. This concept car is setting the trend for future electric vehicles. Peugeot’s “Inception” design focuses on utilizing a smaller footprint. The batteries used in EVs are smaller than non-electric engines. This allows for a smaller vehicle or implementing a more spacious interior. This EV introduces electronic steering replacing analog steering allowing it to be more sensitive. Since the battery is in the floor of the vehicle the windshield can extend further to the front of the car.
