Before we dive into the newsletter title, let’s talk about Pete Holmes. He has a absolutely darling TV show on HBO called “Crashing”, about his upbringing as a devout Christian, his marriage that fails, and how he sheds religion as he rises through the stand-up ranks. The amount of cameos is unreal. Bill Burr, Seth Meyers, John Mulnaey… actually it’s dozens and dozens and too good not to look at here. It’s a wholesome show that includes Artie Shaw, so figure that out. It’s touching, and surprising, and you can binge all 3 seasons, because it’s done.

Admittedly, this clip is basically where I got my head to, in 1991, after watching the movie Mindwalk. I was 15, but never had a religious framework to break out of. He brilliantly encapsulates the baffling notion of existence that we all choose to ignore. I just love it, and his delivery is solid. Blue language, and that’s something he didn’t used to do, but it works:

SO, MOVING ON….

The title of this newsletter is a Santa Cruz trio, called “The Devil Makes Three”. I am *Not* doing hipster-ownership “found them first” nonsense, but I saw them come up when I lived in Monterey 2002-2004, and went to a bunch of their shows. I think I found them when they opened for a jam band at Moe’s Alley. Then my life got turned UPSIDE DOWN, and a few years later saw them for New Year’s Eve at the Catalyst in 2009. My brain is mud soup at this point, and I need to go check my “concert ticket book”, and YES… I have a few from all my shows since younger. I should digitize it. So many great memories on pieces of ephemera.

And yes I know what that word means, because I am a gentleman of the Inner Sunset that used to go to the Vintage Paper Festival. I’m literally at the point of being a seller with all my old hotel stationary. Remember when I wrote poems on old hotel stationary from the 1900-1930s and printed a book for me wedding? Anyone want one? I’ve so many. Lots of Rumi and Cummings!

But watching these guys come up, just like any of you in similar situations, is a joy. So here they are, and THEY LOOK SO OLD. They were tiny baby children! OH WAIT I AM AGING.

But these guys are like whiskey fuelled deckhand scallywags, a fusion of country, rockabilly, and punk? I think that’s fair. Their self titled album is bonkers enjoyable. Old Number 7, The Plank, Bullet are all unbelievably great tracks. But then there’s Graveyard, the titular song for the title of this week’s newsletter!

Another band I was lucky enough to watch “come up”, ie a stratospheric rocket ride to the moon in a few short years, about half a decade… Khruangbin. Have I ever told you the way I find music? About 2018-2019 I was documenting Tik Tok music…

The internet is a bizarre, sinewy, wonderful place at times, *OR* the roundabout ways I found out about my favorite bands.

The internet is a bizarre, sinewy, wonderful place at times, *OR* the roundabout ways I found out about my favorite bands.

But:

KhruangbinJai PaulSofi Tukker – I found them all because the internet is *WEIRD*. And now they’re some of the most important music ever. First one was a farmer warming a baby cow in a hot tub on reddit. Jai was from Grand Theft Auto when I was grieving my dog Pavlov. Sofi was a young aerial dancer winning a competition to one of their songs. So odd.

All that right here!

  • This bizarre ‘superbubble’ spotted by the Hubble Space Telescope has scientists scratching their heads

“Its presence is still something of a mystery,” agency personnel wrote in a statement, explaining there are two leading hypotheses. One is that huge stars blew away the gas with stellar winds, but the wind velocities measured there are “inconsistent” with what the models suggest, according to the statement. Another possibility is perhaps a dying star’s explosion, known as a supernova, caused the hollow in the gas. Lending credence to the supernova theory is evidence of at least one supernova remnant near the superbubble. https://www.space.com/hubble-space-telescope-superbubble-nebula-image

  • Space solar power’s time may finally be coming: This longtime sci-fi dream could actually become reality in the next decade or so, some researchers say. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

  • I am SO SORRY. If you didn’t know? We all knew Free Will is a myth, right? You all knew we’re so deeply bound to our genetics we are essentially passengers yoked to the vehicle of our mind, right? You realize this destroys the lives of philosophical working thinkers, right? Our mind’s processes have trapped us in our heads and we are just watching out of the eyes of the meat suit our genetics controls.

Superintelligence Cannot be Contained: Lessons from Computability Theory https://jair.org/index.php/jair/article/view/12202

The catch is that controlling a super-intelligence far beyond human comprehension would require a simulation of that super-intelligence which we can analyze. But if we’re unable to comprehend it, it’s impossible to create such a simulation.

  • I know it’s dumb, but the simulation thing became more interesting in that now *we* are running simulations… so why couldn’t we be in one? Honestly, it doesn’t matter because “here is here”, no matter what here is.

“Was Our Universe Created in a Laboratory? Credit: NASA, ESA, HEIC, and The Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA) The biggest mystery concerning the history of our universe is what happened before the big bang. Where did our universe come from? Nearly a century ago, Albert Einstein searched for steady-state alternatives to the big bang model because a beginning in time was not philosophically satisfying in his mind. Now there are a variety of conjectures in the scientific literature for our cosmic origins, including the ideas that our universe emerged from a vacuum fluctuation, or that it is cyclic with repeated periods of contraction and expansion, or that it was selected by the anthropic principle out of the string theory landscape of the multiverse—where, as the MIT cosmologist Alan Guth says “everything that can happen will happen … an infinite number of times,” or that it emerged out of the collapse of matter in the interior of a black hole. A less explored possibility is that our universe was created in the laboratory of an advanced technological civilization. Since our universe has a flat geometry with a zero net energy, an advanced civilization could have developed a technology that created a baby universe out of nothing through quantum tunneling.”

Was Our Universe Created in a Laboratory?

Disney w/ Alien, Deadpool, and now Predator IP, it’s truly the Platinum age of movies and TV. I wholly concur with this tweet… people are so wildly insecure they call everything woke, when we could get some of the greatest sci-fi and horror IP set throughout history. But he’s really blown up, and this NPR listen is a joy, as is this NYT article, both from recently about his third season: Joe Pera and the Surprising Pleasures of Gentle Humor Don’t expect twists in these bits. This one about Steven Crowder, “Babylon Bee” (a ghastly conservative Onion knock off), and even why Dave Chappelle aren’t funny. Namely, why conservative comedy falls flat is because there’s no premise but cruelty. It’s interesting Norm Macdonald evolved on trans jokes, well before his death. “You don’t want someone misinterpreting a joke and hurting someone”.

But it’s wild Dave is just zeroed in on woke and cancel culture, because he’s basically at the end stage of Lenny Bruce being unfunny and just ranting about his SCOTUS shit. It’s weird how these previously funny people like him and Rogan just go off the rails silo’d in their own fame and confirmation bias or cognitive dissonance. Whatever the case, this long form take down of bad humor on the right is truly wonderful, and answers a lot of questions about conservative rage just needing to “own the libs” by confusing them for clicks with bad comedy, vs doing actual comedy.

Holy cow. This guy is hilarious, but REALLY smart, and informative.

  • The “it exists, but not officially” Project TR-3B Aurora, as near to spooky UFO stuff as we’ll ever get, here:

It uses highly pressured mercury accelerated by nuclear energy to produce a plasma that creates a field of anti-gravity around the ship. Conventional thrusters located at the tips of the craft allow it to perform all manner of rapid high speed maneuvers along all three axes. Interestingly, the plasma generated also reduces radar signature significantly. So it’ll be almost invisible on radar & remain undetected. This literally means that it can go to any country it likes without being detected by air traffic control & air defence systems.
