Anyone mind having a conversation about cataloging and sorting music? It’s mainly about the concept of top level genre labels, and maybe sub categories… but how do you break out your trees? I know this is a bit High Fidelity audiophile dork… and no I am not into needing a label for everything, to those impractical “Why you gotta put a label on things, maaannnnn?” types…. but it helps for organization. Plain and clear.

The only thing is that it is all so deeply personal.. John Peel said the organization of his shed made perfect sense, as long as you understood his brain. I need to reorganize a bit… so thoughts? (IF you can find that Peel interview, I will send you a mix tape. I would love to link it, but have no idea other than it was deeply personal, and he talks about organizing the music in his famous Shed).

How complex or simple? Do you put all Jamaican and Brazilian into “Jamaican” or “Brazil”? But then what about rocksteady vs reggae, or bossa vs favella rap? How do you break out post mod rock, jam bands, new wave, all the way up to indie? Do you? Is it just a jumble? Are you clinical and objective – or do you use emotive tags? I am starting new genres all the time that are specific to me… like one called “hotel” that I am considering which is basically anything I would like to hear in a hotel lobby. It’s mainly vibe or bossa lounge. Are Hip Hop and Rap the same thing to you?

Some stuff is gloriously easy… mod/punk, goth/industrial, classic rock, blues… but even then it can blue a bit.

I dunno.. I am overthinking it. Nothing new to see here. But my digital music collection can be considered similar to my record collection – full albums, tightly organized.

I just was wondering how people approach this stuff?
