This is a post about sculpture, art, the natural world, eerie sounds for movies, and when they come to the real world and actually sound horrifying for really real…
- THE SINGING RINGING TREE IS RIGHT OUT OF A HORROR MOVIE
https://nerdist.com/article/singing-ringing-tree-sculpture-belongs-in-horror-movie/
- And the Golden Gate Bridge does it now, to boot (a retrofit of railing slats made it a musical instrument)
- And, if you didn’t know… we actually have our own in South San Francisco, called the “Wind Harp”:
- Reminds me of the Waterphone used for horror scores:
- Also… thinking of the scariest sounds in film history, can’t beat the best moment of War of the Worlds: The idea that it is a warning is almost scarier than it would be if the aliens just killed you without warning, because it lets you know death is near and you will live the rest of your short life in terror.”
- Some great stuff here about movie sounds and foley effects, from Freddy Kreuger, Jurassic Park, Texas Chainsaw (man that ending, I’d not seen in a long time), and more: https://www.inverse.com/article/7517-the-10-scariest-sounds-in-movie-history
A few more weird instruments… and I’ll leave out the Theremin assuming everyone has seen it.
- GHOSTBUSTERS ALL DAY: https://moviemusicuk.us/2014/08/07/ghostbusters-elmer-bernstein/
Obsessed with this instrument:
- OOF THIS IS SPOOKY:
- I JUST LIKE BLAST BEAM AS A NAME
- OH FINE. Here’s Theremin actually playing his own instrument. Worth the minute:
- I always think we’ve missed the opportunity to use the “Seven Trumpets” more in film. It could be so evocative of the subtext of both the fiction of the Bible, but how those narratives underpin all the problems coming to bring about the end of the human race, ie anti-science, feeling the earth is for Christians, but they don’t have to protect because they get to believe whatever they want. IE… they’re waiting for the 7 horns, and it’s actually them that is beginning the apocalypse.
I’m not religious… but it does sorta feel like the first trumpet blew:
“Upon the sound of the first trumpet, hail and fire mingled with blood is thrown to Earth, burning up a third of the trees on the planet, and all green grass.”
