“THE AUDIENCE LOVES A SLOW THINKER” – Buster Keaton

I cannot get this Buster Keaton quote out of my head. It nails so much of comedy, whether Bugs Bunny or Three Stooges or someone late on the uptake, missing the point, or not making the connection or having the realization. It’s so fantastic.

Another thought I just had… that human experience of connecting over communication has been “flattened” by technology.

One example is when watching a film, you’d pause and say “Where have I seen that guy before? Have you seen him in a different movie?” And then you would just banter and talk for a long period of time, which would have detours and cul de sacs and one way streets and new ideas, and casual thoughts, and funny mistakes, and just maybe shared experience.

We don’t do that now. The banter of whimsy in conversation is flattened… now we have the answer immediately in front of us. There’s nothing to talk about. It lessens conversational bonds.

Existence is moments, and those are almost always of human connection. In a myriad of prismatic notions of communication we find the bonds of humanity, experience, and how we share it.

Now you just immediately know the answer is Walton Goggins. =/

  • Life is exceedingly precious and rare, even at a microbial level, in the universe. We’re far more special than we currently understand, and I’ve always subscribed to this… “How the ‘Great Filter’ could explain why we haven’t found intelligent aliens”

The most distilled essence of the Great Filter argument is simple: Very few, if any, civilizations in the universe make it to the advanced spacefaring stage. https://www.space.com/space-exploration/search-for-life/how-the-great-filter-could-explain-why-we-havent-found-intelligent-aliens

What Is Entropy? A Measure of Just How Little We Really Know. Exactly 200 years ago, a French engineer introduced an idea that would quantify the universe’s inexorable slide into decay. But entropy, as it’s currently understood, is less a fact about the world than a reflection of our growing ignorance. Embracing that truth is leading to a rethink of everything from rational decision-making to the limits of machines. https://www.quantamagazine.org/what-is-entropy-a-measure-of-just-how-little-we-really-know-20241213/

Free thought aside, I’ve always wondered how much we’re passengers in our own body. Thinking we’re so smart for making some decision, and it was just a collection of grumpy bacteria pulling levers.

The discovery that other vertebrates have healthy, microbial brains is fueling the still controversial possibility that we might have them as well. https://www.quantamagazine.org/fish-have-a-brain-microbiome-could-humans-have-one-too-20241202/

COMEDY

  • The Adult Swim guy who did Too Many Cooks (IFYKYK) did a 90 minute movie about a possessed yule log fireplace in a cabin and it’s super meta, weird, and worthwhile: the film initially presents itself as a holiday footage video of a fireplace located inside a vacation cabin, before eventually giving way to a surprise meta-horror plot occurring within the cabin, and involving the fireplace itself. Adult Swim’s first feature film and first horror film,[1] it was met with generally favorable reviews.[2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adult_Swim_Yule_Log

@cbcnews “We’re all broken inside.” It’s not a line you expect someone to say on stage while accepting an Emmy award. So, when The National’s Ian Hanomansing recently met up with The Bear’s Matty Matheson at one of his Toronto restaurants, he asked him about it. “Everyone’s coming from something,” the Canadian chef, entrepreneur and now Hollywood actor/executive producer explained. “As a society, we’ve got to be there for each other.” In the interview, Matheson spoke warmly about the people who have been there for him, including the friends who stepped in after he had a heart attack at 29 and his endlessly supportive East Coast parents.
