interesting. I dunno… I am such a conan fan I don’t see clearly, but I still look at it like this:
Jay agreed to retire. Then his ratings were such he didn’t want to. They gave him the 10p show, he failed, his ratings destroyed local news casts and the Tonight Show with Conan http://www.popeater.com/2009/10/19/jay-leno-ratings-nbc-local-news/
Jay gets canceled, NBC blames Conan for low Late Night ratings… Conan truly believes in the institution, negotiates a nice vacation for his staff to the tune of 12,000,000 (65K per 190 employees or so, while Conan took 32 Million)…. and will take them with him when he gets a new show. Apparently, just like he did during the writer’s strike, he is paying extra money to them from his own salary to supplement the severance. http://www.thewrap.com/ind-column/new-nbc-breaking-story-13241 In fact, it’s suggested that Leno is only going back to the Tonight show because Conan’s contract was much cheaper to buy out.
I don’t know…. I will be interested what happens in regards to Jay. Depends what happens at the Tonight Show, but with no lead in at 10p there’s no reason to suggest he will be able to pull it together again.
Whatever… it’s complex.
