(the economist article is BADASS, but the story alone is worth the pic of the baby sliding down the graph)
and we don’t have anywhere near the capacity to fill the endless jobs of droll minutia that we have creating in our culture of out of control compartmentalization & specialization – you will recognize how foolhardy it is to celebrate meaningless post modernist bullshit like honing our sociological awareness about banal nonsense; aka getting masters degrees in video gaming or the like.
It might be legitimate to some people, but I have known too many intellectuals and academics to really think they know about anything REALLY happening or have really done ANYTHING at all other than angle for tenure and hit on sexy 20 year olds. Not to be cynical.
To make it a bit clearer – it’s sad we live in a culture where people are given so many endless options of what to do they can’t actually figure out anything to do in the first place, and when they do it’s often totally meaningless.
Of course, when you ask kids what they want to do nowadays, they just want to be famous. Not even for anything in particular. Just fame. http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/books/02/19/fame.junkies/index.html
