A friend from Q’s Restaurant in Boulder was a server when I was expiditing… and he was leaving to Jamaica to be a counselor at a retreat to help wayward youth, and he gave me the keys and title to a 1985 non-turbo Dodge Colt.
I went out in a big poker game, so I negotiated with Blue and Dewey and Darrin and whomever else that I would give the title of the Colt into the pot, and get $250 worth of chips. I ended up winning the game, and the secret was not “desperation give me chips”, it was “holy crap I need to ditch this car I’ve no idea what to do with that’s just parked out back” and it was serendipity.
That $250 car is likely worth quite a bit more if well maintained. It’s always wild when a car from the Malaise Era of vehicles increases in value, being sorta prosaic or mundane but fun. I don’t think the BMW Z8 1990 is considered Malaise, but for a modern era production car selling for 2 to 3x it’s MSRP 30 years later is bonkers. It’s wild how much my 95 wrangler is worth.
I feel the itch for collecting, but FWIW, this is that game. You can see the title. AND, what a time capsule.
