This is a more succinct summation of what I have previously opined on in regards to meaning, purpose, and the intent of Melville’s novel:

Have you read Moby Dick?

Searching for Meaning and Purpose in a (potentially) Godless universe will leave you bitter, twisted, broken, exposed, and ultimately empty.

Meaning and purpose are not quantifiable like mass or energy.  The fact that meaning and purpose are completely human figments should be freeing, once you get past the frightening devastation of your belief systems. Only then, can you truly break free, and just live….

In this sense, it’s shedding the rancor of Captain Ahab, and just “being” like Ishmael – watching the experience of life happen, and just being part of it.

Then you can make your own happiness.
